hey there it’s David H Lawrence the 17th
and in one of the very first videos that
I did way back when we started this this
one a day challenge I talked to you
about how to be a world-class fetch how
to be a complainer par excellence how to
get the most out of posting in
discussion groups asking me for help
asking you know experts for guidance
mentors etc and I gave you three three
practices that I think are really
helpful in terms of you know getting the
most out of those efforts one of them
was to be as detailed as possible so
don’t just ask an amorphous question but
really be detailed and when you have an
error that occurs tell the person that
you’re asking the question what the
error was you know what situation was
going on what were you thinking would
happen also we mentioned you know post
what you know and not what you think you
know or what you’ve just heard right so
when you go to answer and try to be
helpful that’s great but do it when
you’re darn sure you know what you’re
talking about and it’s not just
something that you think you heard at
some point that may be the right answer
no because you know it’s helpful when
you’re accurate right and then the third
one and these are all worth repeating
the third one was don’t hijack the
thread so if you don’t want your your
responses to be buried in some thread
that begins with a question about X and
you go oh by the way in a comment below
now that we’re talking about this what
about Y just create a new post so those
are the three things that I gave you
right off the bat and I want to add a
fourth one to this that’s come up
recently that I’ve seen people doing I
guess in an effort to save time for
themselves but it’s not helpful and I’ll
tell you why here’s what I’d like you to
avoid doing don’t ask multiple questions
in
an email in a post in a share in in a
query it may save you time but
unfortunately down the road it can cause
confusion and a lack of focus and a lack
of clarity and the answer best practice
would be if you have a question give a
series of questions make a series of
posts one question per post so that the
people responding to you can stick to
the knitting and you can stick to the
knitting and you can follow things you
know there are times when people ask
multiple questions in a post and you see
people commenting and replying and
you’re not quite sure what they’re
talking about
even if you knew very well what all
three questions are maybe some of those
comments could be applicable in a
positive or negative way to any one or
more of those and so to make sure that
you have nice clear concise flow of
information just post a separate post
for each question I had a situation
happen recently where somebody posted
three or four different questions in one
in one post and it became a nightmare
trying to keep track of what everybody
was saying in response to any one of
those questions because I wasn’t quite
sure whether they saying yes you should
do that is that question two or question
for you no no you shouldn’t do that so
one question per post is really helpful
and I know that’s a little bit of extra
work but I think in the end you’ll be
happier with the result so I hope that’s
helpful is that something that you maybe
haven’t thought of or maybe you had
thought of and and I I don’t know is
this something that’s useful to you I
hope it is because I really would like
to give you the best support I possibly
can I’d like to be able to respond to
you in a way that makes all kinds of
sense and those four things really
really help you know be detailed if
you’re going to share back share things
that you’re sure you
no and not things that you’ve heard and
don’t hijack the thread and then finally
one question per post don’t put multiple
questions in one post or one email so I

    At my Hideous Survival Job, which is in the low end of retail, this is one of a multitude of things that make me nuts. I’ll get a customer asking me multiple questions about something they’re looking for, firing them off one right after the other before I can answer the first one. I have two options for responses: 1) which one would you like me to answer first?, and 2) saying something like “Yes, no, occasionally and yes in that order.”, depending on what they’re asking. Once I get them to slow down and focus, the exchange goes much better for both of us. Thanks for touching on this.

    This is the most useful piece of information that you’ve given me, that really hits home. I am not a mental problem solver, but am beginning to retrain my mind, make lists, and write it out so I understand what my question actually is before I ask for help.
    In writing lists, writing it down, it clears the panic, that overtakes me, and helps me see things more clearly.

    Excellent suggestion, one that I’ve tried to abide by over the years. Trying to unravel a series of responses to a multi-headed monster is a huge waste of time and unnecessary expenditure of intellectual prowess. It’s like trying to solve world peace in one thread. Can’t be done.
