Seek/Give Mentorship That’s Appropriate To The Journey

Hey there!

I recently did a Quora Session, which is kind of like an AMA (Ask Me Anything). Quorans ask questions, and the Session guest answers based on their career/life experience.

One of the questions I answered was “Want to Be a Better Public Speaker? Here’s How You Should Prepare for Your Next Gig,” and apparently, the folks at Inc. Magazine liked it so much that they republished it.

What I think made it interesting is that it wasn’t just a simple guide, but my answer answered another bigger question: what kind of a public speaker are you now?

And that makes all the difference in the world as to how I’d guide you on how to be a better speaker. Here’s what I mean…

Hope this helps!

David

Why Those Other Casting Sites Usually Aren’t Worth It

Raw YouTube Captioning

hey there it’s David H Lawrence the 17th
and recently Cora which is one of my
favorite sites get a lot of information
from Cora they noticed that I was
contributing answers to questions about
performing and about efficiency and
productivity and public speaking and
they asked me to do their version of an
AMA you know and ask me anything and
it’s called Cora sessions and apparently
the people at ink magazine like some of
my answers to the questions that people
asked me so much that along with
Huffington Post and a couple of other
magazines decided to republish one of my
answers as an article and it’s very
complimentary that’s very cool I’m now a
published author on ink which is kind of
nice but what when I saw the article it
reminded me of something that I wanted
to share with you and that is something
that I do and something that I think
might be helpful if you do both when you
give advice and mentorship and also when
you seek advice and mentorship so the
article was called want to be a better
public speaker well here’s how you
should prepare for your next gig and the
answer to that question the the question
was you know how do I become a better
public speaker and the answer to that
question was actually something that I
took the time to break out into
appropriate answers for where people are
on their journey and that’s really the
secret of this video I want you to both
seek advice from people who can help you
where you’re where you’re at and where
you want to be on your journey and also
give advice appropriately to people who
seek advice from you as to where they
are on their journey are they just
getting started off do they have some
experience under their belt they’re just
trying to get better are they seasoned
it makes a difference in how you answer
a question like how do I better prepare
for example with this article with this
answer I said well it depends on where
you are in your journey
you know if you’re just getting started
off you’re probably really concerned
with the what of what you’re doing you
know what kind of mic should I use how
can I get better at you know walking on
the stage and and standing still how can
I make contact with the audience that
Oprah what do I do with my hands a lot
of what and then if you’ve already got
some experience as a public speaker and
you’re trying to get better you’re
probably more concerned with the how how
do I do this better how do I do that
you’ve encountered some situations that
are out of the ordinary how do I handle
those a lot of how and then once you’re
a pretty established as a public speaker
and you know what you’re doing you start
to consider things like the why you know
why do I want to get this point across
to my audience why do they want me to
speak what’s what’s their goal you know
why why do they want me to be on stage
in front of their their people why do
the people sitting in the audience why
should they believe me you know there’s
a lot more wise so you go from the what
to the how to the why and it depends on
where you are in your journey so maybe
that helps I mean I think that when we
as performers go and ask people for help
they don’t always know where we are in
our journey and you can give them a very
quick brief I’m just getting started
I’ve got a few credits I’ve got some
serious work under my belt and I really
want to take it to the next level let
them know and then when you offer advice
ask some questions first about where
people are in their journey no matter
what you’re answering for them whether
it’s performance or how to use a
computer or what to do with a crosscut
saw doesn’t really matter it’s a good
idea to figure out where they are in
their journey and that’s something that
when I teach voiceover when I teach
audio book narration I’m really really
sensitive to as to where people are and
what kind of experience they have under
their belt so does that help is that a
helpful thing let me know in the
comments below if that resonates with
you because I think sometimes people
give you advice that isn’t all that
useful because you’re either too far
along in your journey or not far enough
along in your journey and so you want to
kind of make a match there that makes
sense to you tell
in the comments below I want to make
sure I’m connecting if you’d like to
join my list and find out when these
videos come out and maybe ask some
questions of your own and get some
mentorship I’d love to have you join my
list below there’s a subscribe button
somewhere and if you’d like to see the
latest video I’ve done the one that’s
just been released go ahead and click on
that frame there and YouTube will play
it for you I’m David H Lawrence xvii I
thank you so much for watching and I
will talk to you tomorrow

Absolutely! You’ll always get a better reception, and be more helpful, if you consider where your audience—even an audience of one—is coming from.

  2. Chris Buckner July 15, 2019 at 1:32 pm #

Good advice. I’ll have to remember this. Thanks for the video David.

  3. Bob McCoy July 30, 2019 at 5:57 am #

I wish more people would provide the information up front when asking for advice. I come from an IT background so I see it all the time. So I have to ask a bunch of questions before I can even start down the path to a solution. I wish more people would adopt the mindset, “If I were going to provide advice, what information would I want?” In other words, please don’t make us guess. And one of my biggest pet peeves is speculative answers, and the Internet is rife with them. If you don’t know the answer, don’t guess or speculate. Step away from the keyboard see what happens.
